I found myself asking the question above - what is the biggest compliment I've received as a musician?

A lot of people may think that the answer is obvious - how amazing you sound, right? Well, yes that's a part of it. But actually there is more to that answer than meets the eye.

As a Music Teacher I have always been impressed more with the quality of a musicians sound then the stage presence surrounding it. When I listen to students learning to play I am conscious of what makes everything they do sound so good. Whether that be the quality of the techniques, the accuracy of the chord, the dynamic against the other instruments. These are but just a few reasons on why a musician can sound the best and often better than others. It isn't always the speed or how much they play... in fact it's sometimes what they DON'T play that impresses me more. The humility and confidence to hold back for the benefit of the overall sound of the track is way more interesting than filling every space with noise.

The quality of a musician stems even further back to their approach to practice. It's not always WHAT you practice but HOW you practice. Small victories that are focused on timing, technique and control sound way more impressive than being able to play an entire track in a sloppy manner. The sound matters, how you look doing it (less so).
