Buying a guitar can be a minefield. There are so many options – colours, styles, different electronics, type etc. When a buying a guitar to use in your guitar lessons with Fresh Music Aberdeen it’s important to think about these 3 main points:
1. PRICE
Set yourself a budget, for a good acoustic guitar I’d look to spend no less than £200 - £300. For a good electric guitar, I’d aim for £250 - £600 for something that will last and sound good. Second-hand guitars are an option too but be careful – if there is something wrong with it that you don’t spot straight away you may not have any comeback after purchase.
2. STYLE
I get asked a lot about what guitar students should buy to use within their guitar lessons. It’s important to love the guitar you choose. It’s helpful to try out a few before you commit to buying one. Find your local guitar store and try a few different types. Some will have heavier and bigger bodies and others not so. Some will have a maple fretboard (brighter sounding) and some may have either a rosewood, mahogany or even roasted maple (warmer sounding). Find what you like, pick what you’d love to pick up every day and play.
3. QUALITY
If you’re looking to buy a bass guitar you may want to consider buying one with active pickups over one with passive pickups. Active pickups are more powerful as they’re battery operated. If you’re buying an electric guitar consider the pickups. Seymour Duncans, Bareknuckle, EMG and Alnico pickups are a good choice depending on what sound you’re after. It’s important to check the quality of wood that’s been used to build the instrument too. Ash is a cheaper wood whereas mahogany is more expensive and can provide a better sound.
There are so many variables to consider when choosing a guitar to use in your guitar lessons. If you take your time, do your research and ask the right questions you’ll end up with a beautiful guitar at a fair price.
