Why Learning Practical Theory is Important: Guitar Lessons in Aberdeen

The big question when learning any instrument is whether or not theory is important in learning.  The simple and short answer is YES! The longer answer requires a little bit more of an explanation.

When receiving guitar lessons in Aberdeen with Fresh Music Aberdeen all students receive what I call, practical theory.  Theory that is relevant to the song they are learning at the time.  This may include key signature, chord progression, borrowed chords, modulation, interesting melodic changes and more.  This is vital if the student is to become an independent player over time.

I have many students who have come here to learn in their later years having been self-taught in the past.  They spent years just learning tabs and chords without much thought for the theory.  Now they’ve hit a brick wall and can no longer progress any further because they don’t have the theory to go with it.  Now don’t get me wrong, I too was hesitant to learn theory in my early years of playing guitar.  It wasn’t until I received guitar lessons in Aberdeen that I realised that to experience the ultimate freedom when playing guitar, I must first learn the theory that allows me to play with expression, freedom and without fear of what the music is doing.

The thought of sticking your head into a theory book sounds daunting and boring to be honest.  But it doesn’t need to be like that.  The students learning guitar here at Fresh Music Aberdeen learn the theory as they go.  They learn to understand every song they play so in future they can better analyse and mess with the track if they choose to do so.

Learning theory doesn’t have to be difficult when learning guitar in Aberdeen.  At Fresh Music Aberdeen the teaching is based on the idea that practical theory is the best theory.  Learn with every song you learn and theory never needs to become a chore!
