Learning guitar can be daunting. It feels like a mountain that is unclimbable, particularly as an adult when your time is limited at the best of times.
I teach a large number of adult students who are progressing well within their guitar playing. Why? Because they are practicing in the right way. Surely there is only one way to practice... pick up the guitar and play right? Well yes and no, below I've listed a few ways that can make learning the guitar quicker and more enjoyable.

Don't just noodle!
- It's human nature to want to pick up the guitar and just jam. Don't do that - it's not a productive use of your time. Pick a line, a bar or a manageable section of a piece of music and do that instead. It's more productive, you'll feel like you've achieved more and what you've practiced will actually have a fantastic quality - win, win, win!
Look for small victories
- it's easy to get caught up with the bigger picture and feel overwhelmed when looking at the mountain that you have to climb. Don't - instead focus on the small victories - one technique instead of 10, one line of music instead of the whole thing. One slower tempo speed rather than the fastest you think you can manage. If you do you'll get the feeling of instant gratification.
It's not how long it takes, it's more about what you can achieve.
- the question I get asked all the time is - how long will it take to learn this song, piece, technique, riff, scale etc.? The answer is you are focusing on the wrong thing. Don't focus on how long it takes - focus on getting it right (no matter the time). It's much more satisfying when you focus on the quality, then the length of time it takes. Let your perfectionism force a do it till it's right mentallity.
