Guitar Lessons in Aberdeen: Are Learning Grades Worth It?

Writer's picture: Connor MontgomeryConnor Montgomery

I have a vast array of students who want to learn all different types of music.  Some like to do songs by their favourite artists whilst others prefer to learn and sit grades.

For reference, the grades work from 1 – 8.  1 is the lowest grade and 8 is the highest.  There are some exam boards that now offer a debut grade.  This is to introduce those new to the grades into it more gently so they can learn what to expect moving forward through the grades.

I’ve often been asked if you need to do every grade.  The short answer is no.  I’ve had many students who have started at grade 5 or above.  It really does come down to your competency as a player at the time you decide to sit the grades.

There are some exam boards who offer performance only exams.  This usually consists of learning 3 songs to which you must perform to a backing track in front of an examiner.  Digitally recorded exams are also possible for those who’d prefer to do it this way.  I have many who do their exams within their guitar lessons with me.

Other exam boards offer more technical exercises alongside the pieces you play.  You’d be asked to play scales, arpeggios and chords.  You might also be asked to play a quick study piece or riff.

There are many advantages to the grades.  It gives you the opportunity to learn songs in genres that you might not otherwise play in.  It creates the opportunity to learn a vast array of scales and chords as well testing your theory and instrument knowledge.

Understandably grades are not for everyone and some prefer to play as they go without ever feeling the desire to sit the grades – that’s OK too!  The grades are there for those who want to learn them. For those who just want to play what they like in their guitar lessons there is space to do that at Fresh Music Aberdeen as well.
