Guitar Lessons for All Ages (sort of): A Guitar Teacher’s Opinion

Writer's picture: Connor MontgomeryConnor Montgomery

The one thing I like most about offering guitar lessons in Aberdeen is the diverse group of people that I get to teach.  They are of all ages and backgrounds.  I love the variety of styles and genres that the students enjoy and I love that I get to work with adults, teenagers and children.

I sometimes receive requests to teach very young children.  This is a bit of a grey area when it comes to learning an instrument.  I am fully aware that all children learn and develop differently and this is part of the reason that I don’t offer group lessons.  I may sound like a hypocrite here as I started at the age of 5 but I actually found that I didn’t really have the attention span for it until I was 7 (in hindsight). I realise that some children do develop a better attention span at an earlier age but my experience in teaching guitar has taught me that this is rare.

For that reason, I only offer lessons to students aged 7 and above.  It is without prejudice and more about bang for buck.  I find that often students aged under 7 just want to play games and chat (understandably so).  My teaching style isn’t suited really to that type of learning.  I like my students to be able to have a good grasp of reading to help them become better musicians more quickly.

I realise there may be some guitar virtuosos out there younger than that and I am flexible enough to at least consider teaching someone younger than the age of 7, but at my own discretion.  Waiting until your child is a little older will mean they can experience music in the best way, be able to follow instruction and learn quickly whilst enjoying it along the way.

There is no upper age limit (as long as your fingers still work).  Fresh Music Aberdeen tries to be as inclusive as possible within the realms of sensibility and common sense.

Learning guitar and receiving lessons is about value for money.  For me to my job best I welcome you to consider my advice above!

Keep playing!

Connor
