Feeling Jaded?  Guitar Lessons Made Easy

Writer: Connor MontgomeryConnor Montgomery

I don’t know about you but I often go through phases where I feel jaded in regards to my guitar playing and even teaching at times.  I feel that I’m going through the motions without really any results.  It can be frustrating as I know I want to be a better player and teacher but there are times where I just simply don’t have the motivation to play or learn new things.

I think this is the case for most players/teachers (whether they’d admit it or not).  I feel we can all get stuck in a rut at times.  I often compare being a musician to a rollercoaster ride.  There will be times when you feel you’re heading up and up and you’re playing is on fire.  Equally there are times when you feel your playing drops and suddenly crashes and burns (hopefully that doesn't happen if you're on an actual roller-coaster!!!).

The way our playing rises and falls often changes due to life circumstances but there are times when you’ll feel your playing is more constantly low – hence feeling more jaded at those times.

The best way to combat that lack of interest or motivation is to find new music to inspire you.  This is sometimes easier said than done but with the likes of Spotify and iTunes there are always playlists to help get us there.  I find watching music videos of great musicians and bands helps me out of my slump.

I often encourage students within their guitar lessons to listen to new music as it helps broaden their tastes, even if they are going through a high with their playing.

To make guitar lessons even better I try to think of new riffs and ideas to push both the student and me to try new things.  Again, it will help inspire us to learn and play more.

If you’re struggling with motivation and you feel a little jaded don’t worry!  It’s normal, start listening to new music, watch as many cool music videos as you can and get inspired!
