A Guitar Teacher's Observation:  The Power of Self-Belief

One of the most common issues that I come across in my role as a guitar teacher in Aberdeen is the distinct lack of self-belief that many of us have.  I wonder if you can relate?

That voice in your head that tells you that you’re useless and that you’ll never be great?  If this sounds familiar, then it sounds like you may be one of those who also struggle with this age old problem.  This is most probably due to the bullying voice inside your head that is telling you that you won’t succeed.

In my time as a guitar teacher (over 20 years) I see it more and more amongst students who come to play.  Self-belief is one of the hardest things to grasp, particularly in a world where we are being constantly compared to others.  We often shy away from giving our all because of fear of failure.  Fear is the number one thing that will stop you from doing anything new, including guitar lessons!

I want you to know that with the right training, patience and a willingness to learn you can become a phenomenal guitar player.  It takes time and dedication, a commitment.  If you can give it that then you will see results quickly.  In a world of instant gratification patience, time and dedication are often skills we lack.  By learning to play the guitar not only will you develop those skills but you will also gain the practical skills too to play guitar well and easily.

We create so many barriers for ourselves when learning – believe me, I’ve seen it.  Often students are unaware that they’re holding themselves back due to the fear lurking within their subconscious.  And before you say it – yes this is very psychological talk, because when it comes to learning guitar   psychology has a lot to do with it.

With the right mind-set and an awareness of all the things that hold you back from believing in yourself then you go further than you ever thought possible.

Pick up and a guitar and believe that you can do it – I know you can!
